The course of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is shown in stages - each with an illustration of the surface of the heart; the heart wall or the interior of the heart as well as a cross section of an artery.


The stages show how a calcified artery can lead to ischemia (lack of oxygen) and how a completely blocked artery leads to a heart attack (myocardial infarction) and recovery due to collateral formation.


The poster also shows the consequences of high blood pressure, which can lead to hypertrophy and dilation of the left ventricle. Finally, heart failure, mitral valve insufficiency and old age are also described and explained.


For comparison with the pathological conditions, a healthy heart seen from the front, in cross-section and with the coronary artery system is shown.
