Description

If you are looking for an enlarged and flexible model of the upper joints of the spine, this model is ideal.

The model's bones are twice the size of the bones of an adult and show the upper cervical vertebrae as well as the lower part of the skull. The model is held together by an elastic band and is delivered on a removable stand.

Anatomically speaking

Anatomically, the model shows the 1st to 3rd cervical vertebra and thus the atlas (C1) and axis (C2). In addition, the lower part of the skull can be seen, which i.a. includes the neck bone (os occipitale). Therefore, the model shows both upper and lower neck joints. You can also see the facet joints (the sliding joints between the hinges of the vertebrae).

There are no discs inserted between the vertebrae, which is why the symphyses (joints between the vertebral bodies) are not visible. Overall, the bone quality is very good, and you can clearly see, for example, knots and depressions in the bone tissue.

Movement-wise

In terms of movement, the model is very flexible. The elastic can also be easily removed. The model can be used to demonstrate the most important movements in the neck joints, which are the nodding and rocking of the head, which takes place in the upper neck joint, and the shaking of the head, which takes place in the lower neck joint.

Clinically speaking

Clinically, this model is ideal for understanding disorders related to upper and lower neck joints. It is, for example, atlantoaxial subluxation due to weakening of the ligamentum transversum atlantis and fractures such as C0/1 fracture, Jefferson's fracture, fracture of its axis and Hangman fracture.

Furthermore, the model can be used to understand disorders such as spondylosis and osteoarthritis (osteoarthritis).
